Building a Plywood Battery Box (and Heavy Duty Stand)

The video shows how to make a large, plywood battery box that will hold (10) 6 volt deep cycle batteries. The batteries are used to store DC electricity for a solar or wind turbine system.

Battery-Layout The plywood box measures 48″ long x 24″ wide x 15″ tall. It was made from one sheet of 3/4″ Oak plywood. To keep cost down, try to find damaged plywood, I picked sheet for $10.00 (regular price is $66.00 each)

In the past, I have built a smaller box for (4) batteries and it has worked out well.

A Passive Venting Battery Bank for Off-Grid Applications

Overhead of the batteries I uses a passive venting system for the battery box. The battery box hold (4) 6 volt deep cycle batteries. It is wire for a the volt system. The box was constructed from f/8″ Birch plywood and painted white. The lid can easily be flipped open and closed tightly. I have added a seal around the outside of the lid. For me, it’s just a piece of mind that something can function without moving parts. The venting system was made up from 3/4″ – 1-1/2″ PVC pipe that was dry fitted together. The large 1-1/2″ pipe for the rising hydrogen and the small 3/4″ fresh air pipe running to the bottom. It creates a vacuum inside the box and doesn’t need electricity to work.

The batteries appear dirty because they bubbled over and the acid had to be neutralized with baking soda.

Generating Springtime Solar Power (2013)

The solar panels were collecting just a bit of electricity from the sun on the Easter Weekend. The sun is still low in the sky and in the tree line. I’m running a 12 volt system with four 6 volt deep cycle batteries. So, with my rig, the amount of sun and everything unplugged, the batteries would recharge from 80% at 10:00am to 100% by 4:00pm.

Compared to a lot of other slick systems out there, it might by wimpy, but, it will do for now.

The plan for this summer, is to move all the panels to the pole, put the offshore MPPT charge controller on the 2 poly panels and the shower door panel. The Morningstar Charge controller will be converted over to a diversion mode for the recycled wind turbine. Maybe, I’ll pick up two more 6 volt batteries…
