Make a “Money” Costume for Halloween

31 Oct , 2013

Need a quick costume for Halloween or a party? Check out this costume whipped up the night before Halloween. It’s work safe and quite popular with the accounting department.

The materials consisted a bunch of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar fake bills, scissors, hot glue, a shirt and pants. Fairly easy, inexpensive and took about 2 hours to complete.

Sample of original and my currency

How to get started? Find a free image of a paper bill online.
Note: Don’t place a dollar bill directly on a photocopier. That is a big no, no (counterfeit) and could temporarily “lock out” the photocopier. A tech from Konica-Minolta happened to mention it.

Save to your computer. Try to reduce the size of children play money and print it out many times. (Will need a 100 bills) Cut and hot glue directly to your outfit. Like shingles on a house roof, lay the bills in layers  It goes quite quickly if the bills are ready in stacks.

If you are eccentric and creative like me, find a sample and save it to your computer. Then take stills of your face, try to pose like on the historical people pictures on the bills (on a Mac, use Photo Booth application). Then import your stills of your face into Photoshop. Using the Lasso tool trace around your face. Works best just above your eyebrows, under the chin and the pockets of the cheeks. Copy the marque (marching ants) and paste it over top of the historical person on your bill. Play with the Color Balance for a match the existing image. Change the opacity of the layer to around 75%. Once you are happy, flatten the layers and save as a Photoshop file. Make a contact sheet up and print out. The currency in Canada are color, so, I went that route. Black and white is fine too.

Use an Xacto knife or scissors to cut out the bills. Make stacks of mixed currency.

Warm up a hot glue gun and make a few dabs. Press the bills down and repeat. Careful, the hot glue is still really hot.

It makes it easier if you insert a round coffee can the pant legs. For easier walking, I did just the front. If you want to amp it up, you can do it all the way around.

Enjoy!
